Most businesses are invisible in AI search. Not ranked lower than their competitors. Simply not there. This is what that costs and why fixing it is more complex than most people assume.

Getting a business found on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI requires building a specific set of signals across multiple platforms simultaneously. It is not a single fix and it is not an extension of traditional SEO. AI tools assess businesses very differently from how Google ranks websites, drawing on a much wider range of sources and applying different credibility criteria. Brookstone Creative builds this presence for engineering, manufacturing and B2B businesses across the UK through its AEO, AIO and GEO services.
A few months ago I asked a fairly simple question to a business owner I was talking to.
Open ChatGPT now, I said. Type in the question your best potential customer would ask to find a company like yours. Not your company name. The question a buyer would ask.
They typed it in. Read the response. Looked up.
We are not in there, they said.
No, I said. You are not.
That conversation happens regularly. And the reaction is always the same. Surprise, because they had not realised this was something that needed addressing. And concern, because the commercial implication is obvious once you see it.
If a growing proportion of your buyers are using AI tools to research suppliers, and the data consistently shows that they are, then a business that does not appear in those responses is invisible to those buyers. Not ranked lower than competitors. Not on page two. Not there at all.
The buyer who asks ChatGPT for a supplier recommendation and does not see your business listed will not know to look for you. They will simply contact one of the businesses that did appear.
Why AI search is fundamentally different from Google
The critical thing to understand about AI search is that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI do not work the way Google does. Google returns a list of ranked websites and the searcher chooses where to click. AI tools generate a synthesised response, a recommendation, from sources they have assessed as credible and relevant. The business either appears in that recommendation or it does not.
This changes the commercial stakes considerably. In traditional search, being on page two is a partial loss. In AI search, not being cited is a complete loss. The buyer receives an answer and acts on it. The businesses not in that answer are not considered.
It also changes what determines visibility. Research published by Whitehat SEO in early 2026 found that brand websites account for only around 10 per cent of what AI tools cite. The remaining 90 per cent comes from third-party sources: review platforms, industry directories, publications, LinkedIn and other external references. A business that has only invested in its website has addressed one tenth of the picture.
That is the fundamental challenge. Getting found on ChatGPT requires building a credible, consistent presence across a wide range of platforms simultaneously, not optimising a single channel.
The size of the opportunity
Google AI Overview prevalence has roughly doubled in the past year, from 13 per cent of Google queries in early 2025 to over 25 per cent by early 2026 according to research from Conductor. ChatGPT processes hundreds of millions of search-intent queries every week. Perplexity has passed 100 million monthly active users.
These are not future projections. This is happening now, among the buyers who are researching your sector and your competitors today.
The businesses that are visible in those responses are earning consideration from buyers who will never type a traditional Google search for this category. The ones that are invisible are not competing for that consideration at all, because they do not know the competition is taking place.
For UK businesses in sectors where buyer research is thorough and the purchasing decision is significant, the proportion of buyers now using AI tools as part of their research process is substantial and growing. The window for establishing AI search visibility ahead of the majority of competitors is still open in most sectors. It will not stay open indefinitely.
The businesses building AI search visibility now are not doing something clever. They are doing something necessary, slightly ahead of when it becomes unavoidable.
Why it is more complex than most businesses expect
The businesses that try to address AI search visibility themselves usually start in the wrong place. They read something about keywords or content optimisation and apply the same thinking they used for traditional SEO. They update a few website pages. They check that Google can index their site. And then they run the test again and find they are still not appearing in ChatGPT.
The reason is that AI search visibility is not primarily a website problem. The website matters, but it is one component of a much more interconnected picture. The technical configuration of how the website is set up for AI access. The way content is structured at a fundamental level. The completeness and activity of the Google Business Profile. The presence and recency of reviews across the right platforms. The consistency of the LinkedIn company presence. The breadth of external mentions in the directories and publications that AI tools treat as credibility evidence.
Each of these areas has specific requirements. Each interacts with the others. Getting some of them right without addressing all of them produces partial visibility at best. And because AI tools update their source preferences regularly, research shows that between 40 and 60 per cent of cited sources change month to month, maintaining AI search visibility requires sustained attention rather than a one-time project.
This is the work that Brookstone Creative does for its clients. Not as a single campaign but as an ongoing programme that builds and maintains the full picture that AI tools use to assess whether a business is worth recommending.
The practical test
There is one thing worth doing before any other conversation about AI search visibility.
Open ChatGPT. Type the question your most valuable potential customer would ask to find a business like yours. Not your company name. The genuine buyer question. Then do the same on Perplexity. Then check what Google AI returns for the same query.
What you find tells you your current position. If your business appears consistently across all three, you have some AI search visibility. If it appears in some but not others, your visibility is partial. If it does not appear in any, you are invisible in all three of the major AI search environments your buyers are currently using.
That picture, the gap between where you currently appear and where you need to appear, is the starting point for every AI search visibility programme Brookstone Creative builds. We run that audit across all five major AI platforms, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and use what we find to build a programme specific to the business, the sector and the buyers it is trying to reach.
Questions business owners ask about getting found on ChatGPT
Why is my business not showing up on ChatGPT?
A business that is not showing up on ChatGPT has gaps in the signals that AI tools use to assess whether a business is credible and relevant enough to recommend. Those signals span the website, the Google Business Profile, review platforms, LinkedIn and external directories and publications. Identifying which specific gaps apply to a given business requires an audit across all of those areas. Brookstone Creative provides this audit as the starting point for every AI search visibility programme.
The most common misconception is that not appearing on ChatGPT is a website content problem. Sometimes it is. More often it reflects gaps in the external presence that AI tools weight heavily as third-party credibility signals. A business with excellent website content but thin external presence will consistently underperform in AI search relative to a business with a complete and consistent presence across all the platforms AI tools consult.
How is AI search different from Google SEO?
AI search differs from Google SEO in how it selects sources, what it weights as credibility signals, and what the commercial outcome looks like for the business. Google returns a ranked list and buyers choose where to click. AI tools generate a synthesised recommendation in which the business either appears or does not. Google weights website content and backlinks heavily. AI tools weight the full external presence including reviews, directories, LinkedIn and industry publications, with brand websites accounting for only around 10 per cent of citations according to research from Whitehat SEO in 2026. Traditional SEO is necessary but not sufficient for AI search visibility.
Brookstone Creative builds SEO and AI search visibility as an integrated programme because the foundations overlap but the specific requirements differ. A business that invests in both from the same commercial base is more efficiently positioned than one treating them as separate disciplines. The starting point is always the same: understanding exactly where the business currently stands in both environments before deciding where to invest.
How long does it take to get a business found on ChatGPT?
The timeline for building AI search visibility depends on the starting point and the gaps identified in the initial audit. Some improvements take effect within weeks. Others, particularly those involving external presence building and review accumulation, take several months to produce consistent results. AI search visibility, like traditional SEO, compounds with sustained investment rather than arriving from a single intervention. Businesses that start building AI search visibility now will be measurably better positioned in six months than those that start then. Brookstone Creative sets realistic timelines at the start of every programme based on the specific gaps and the sector competitive landscape.
The most important thing to understand about AI search visibility timelines is that the competitive window in most UK business sectors is still open. The businesses investing in it now are getting ahead while most of their competitors have not yet started. Brookstone Creative works with engineering, manufacturing and B2B businesses across the UK to build that visibility. Engineering Marketing. Built by Engineers.
