Pantone has announced the two colours it has chosen for Colour of the Year 2021.

The American colour company chooses a shade every year and says that Pantone 17-5104 known as Ultimate Grey and Pantone 13-0647 known as Illuminating (a vibrant yellow) are the colours of 2021. The yellow and grey tones create an “aspirational colour pairing, conjoining deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the optimistic promise of a sunshine filled day”.

The process of choosing a colour for the year has been running for 22 years and aims to influence the wider world of design including interior and industrial design.

According to Pantone executive director Leatrice Eiseman, choosing the pairing of two independent colours shows how “different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both during and uplifting”.

The annual choice of colours often relates to world events and this years choice appears to reflect the current tumultuous times. The colours represent encouragement and hope towards the future.
